Tom Regnier has been selected by the Dade County Bar Association as one of four attorneys to inaugurate the DCBA’s Justice Thurgood Marshall Distinguished Lecture Series on Thursday morning, September 8, 2016. The series honors the memory of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first black person to serve on the Court. Before being appointed to the Court, Marshall, as a lawyer, won the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case, which disallowed racial segregation in public schools.
The Thurgood Marshall Distinguished Lecture Series’ initial presentation will include these attorneys:
- 9:30-10:00 Ervin A. Gonzalez. Considerations and methods in presenting your case to baby boomers, generation X,Y and Millennial jurors.
- 10:00-10:30 Mark Eiglarsh. What every civil lawyer should know about criminal law.
- 10:30 – 11:00 Tom Regnier. Hamlet and the Law of Homicide: The Life of the Mind in Law and Art.
- 11:00-11:30 Richard Warren Rappaport. Television, Music and Film and the Power of the Media to Influence Presidential Politics.
Tom Regnier said, “I am grateful to the Dade County Bar Association for selecting me to appear with three distinguished attorneys in this lecture series honoring the great Thurgood Marshall.” Tom has taught a course on Shakespeare and the law at the University of Miami School of Law and has written scholarly articles on the subject. He has spoken on Shakespeare and the law at venues throughout the U.S., including the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC. His presentation on Hamlet and the law of homicide argues that the author of Hamlet was aware of changes that were occurring in the law of homicide in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, particularly the evolution away from the medieval view of law, which focused entirely on a person’s actions, to the modern view, which also takes into account a person’s state of mind. This legal development paralleled the evolution in Shakespeare’s art: a greater emphasis on the inner life of the character than was seen in earlier literature.
